Avoid a Sunburn on Vacation

sunscreenarticle1Skin burns, ouch! Don’t ruin your fabulous vacation by spending it in pain and looking like a giant tomato.

Follow these tips to enjoy the sun safely on your vacation.

Use a sunscreen with SPF 45 or greater.  After showering, dry off then apply sunscreen all over your body and face before you go out into the sun. Apply at least 30 minutes prior to going outdoors. Remember, sun products can take a while to take effect.

Sun protection should then be applied again when you are out on the beach.  It is also very important to reapply every 2 hours.  Eyes, lips and ears are touch up spots that need constant re-application.  Drink plenty of water, both while you’re out in the sun and after you come inside. A well-hydrated body can fight off the effects of a sunburn better than a dehydrated one. Consider apply lip balm. The most important ingredients to look for in your sunscreen are: Parsol 1789 (Avobenzone), Helioplex, Mexoryl and micronized Zinc Oxide or micronized Titanium Dioxide.

Wear sunglasses that block 100 percent of UVA and UBA rays.  If you know you are staying in the sun an extended period of time, consider wearing a hat or visor.

The sun is at it’s peak from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Don’t be deceived by a cloudy day, as you can still burn.

If you do happen to get the dreaded vacation sunburn take a cool bath to soothe and relieve pain, apply an aloe or natural, plant-based lotion thickly to relieve a sunburn and allow this lotion to soak in for 10 minutes before you wipe off the excess. Be conscious of the effects and stay out of the sun until the burn is gone.

Hawaii Vacation: Common Hawaiian Luau Foods

Planning on taking a cruise, tour or vacation to Hawaii?

hawaiifoodConsidered a “must do” by most is to attend a Hawaiian Luau. Wondering what kind of food you can expect during a Luau in Hawaii? Many foods may seem quite foreign to you.

Below is a look at some of the foods and drinks that you are likely to find at one or more of the luaus throughout Hawaii.

Char Siu:  These delicious rich, red spareribs are a favorite thanks to the Chinese immigrants of Hawaii.

Chicken Lu’au
:  A Hawaiian classic made with chicken cooked with taro leaves (or spinach) and coconut milk.

Kim Chee:  Great as a dip for pupu’s (appetizers) or a stand-alone side dish, Korean style Kim Chee is made of fresh island cabbage, chili peppers, ginger, garlic, and other seasonings.

Kalua-style chicken, pork or turkey:  Meat that is cooked for long hours wrapped inside banana, ti or luau leaves.  The long cooking time allows the meat to come out tender, juicy and full of flavor.

Kalua pua’a:  Roast pork, as its prepared in the Hawaiian imu or underground steam oven. Kalua pig is traditionally seasoned with sea salt and sometimes green onions.

Poi : Traditional Hawaiian staple made by pounding boiled taro roots and mixing with water until it reaches a smooth consistency.

Poke: Raw fish marinated in lemon or lime juice with other condiments and a little coconut cream.

Mai Tai:  The Mai Tai is an alcoholic cocktail that has become synonymous with Hawaiian sunsets and lounging in hammocks. It is a mix of Jamaican rum and lime juice, garnished with fresh mint. Blue Hawaii’s, Lava Flow’s and other tropical drinks are very popular as well.

Breads & Cakes: Fresh baked breads, pastries and cakes made with island fruits such as mangos, guava, coconut and ripe bananas.

We’ve included a recipe below for tasty Mango bread.

Mango Bread Recipe:

Version is prepared from a recipe by Hawaii’s most famous chef, Sam Choy.

Ingredients:
2 cups flour, sifted
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon salt
1 cups sugar
3 eggs
1/2 cup melted butter

NCL Epic : Entertainment Onboard NCL Epic Ship

Category:   Press Release
Topic:           Blue Man Group to Headline NCL Epic’s Entertainment

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) today announced it is changing the face of cruise line entertainment on its next generation of Freestyle Cruising ship, Norwegian Epic. In another industry first, the company will welcome Blue Man Group, performing in the 685-seat Epic Theater. Blue Man Group is best known for their wildly popular theatrical shows and concerts which combine music, comedy and multimedia theatrics to produce a totally unique form of entertainment. The blissful party atmosphere created at their live events has become the trademark of a Blue Man Group experience and beginning in the summer of 2010 will be seen for the first time ever at sea only on Norwegian Epic.

“Norwegian Cruise Line has spent 42 years breaking the boundaries of traditional cruising and redefining what it means to be innovative. Now, with Norwegian Epic, we are re-inventing cruise ship entertainment by offering multiple entertainment options for every taste and age,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer. “Having a world-class creative organization like Blue Man Group headline the entertainment on Norwegian Epic will provide our guests with a sensory experience unlike any other at sea.”

More Entertainment Venues, Offerings

Norwegian Epic will have multiple, specially-designed entertainment venues throughout the ship so that guests can choose from a wide variety of entertainment each evening of their cruise. No longer will entertainment be focused on two nightly shows in one large main theater. Norwegian Epic takes Freestyle Cruising to the next level by offering a number of entertainment options in specially-designed venues, some offered for the first time ever at sea, with choices to appeal to a broad audience.

Spiegel Tent: On Norwegian Epic, guests will find the only “big top” at sea. In this intimate 265-seat theater-in-the-round, famed producer/director Neil Goldberg will present Cirque Dreams® and Dinner. This one of a kind interactive theatrical dining experience will be performed in the air, while juggling dinner courses, with music, mayhem and acrobatic imagination. During this two-hour show, guests will marvel in amazement and become part of a celebration of spectacle and fantasy. The entire experience will be unlike anything else at sea.

Headliners Comedy Club: This 280-seat comedy club will feature the hilarious improvisational comedy of The Second City, as Norwegian continues its exclusive partnership with the famed troupe. For nearly 50 years, The Second City has honed the skills of comedic legends such as Bill Murray, Chris Farley, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Gilda Radner and John Belushi. The ensemble will perform a special customized comedy revue of satirical skits, hilarious songs and inventive improvisation. The venue’s design centers on a show lounge format with a small raised stage, concrete floors and brick walls with a full bar.

Fat Cats: Guests on board Norwegian Epic can sit back and relax listening to the cool vibes of jazz and blues in this 200-seat jazz club. Fat Cats will feature nightly live blues and jazz performances by world-class talent. The urban setting creates a hipster vibe complete with full bar and comfortable leather sofas and chairs.

Epic Casino: This appropriately named casino is Norwegian’s largest casino at sea, spanning more than 13,000 square feet. It features an elegant Monte Carlo inspired design theme and is open to Taste, the Atrium restaurant below, and to the excitement of Bar Central above. Here, guests will find many opportunities to try their luck including 340 of the latest slot machines; along with gaming tables featuring poker, black jack, roulette and craps. And, with the most rewarding Players Club Program at sea there will be something for everyone, from the novice to the high roller. Cascades Bar, with a grand central crystal chandelier, serves as the casino’s centerpiece.

Epic Theater: In addition, the theater will be home to another featured show which will be announced later this year.

Carnival Cruise Supper Club

carnival113x70_main_diningSo many ships offer alternative dining (most at a fee of $15-30 per person) and they do deliver a wonderful relaxing evening and glorious food.  Carnival has gone one better and offers a Supper Club.  My husband and I cruised on the Valor and decided to give it a try.  It’s a winner.

As a Supper Club, it offers music and dancing while dining. A trio plays pleasant tunes from the 40s to the 70s and in between courses, it’s nice to dance with your partner.  The dance floor is small, adding to the intimacy of the club, and the ambiance and décor are very lovely.  It is slightly reminiscent of the glory days of the 40s and 50s when couples really dressed to go to El Morocco or the Stork Club in NY.  The good news is all you need to wear  is casual “country club elegance”.

The menu choices were excellent and we were shown the choices in cuts for steak, veal or chops as well as lobster.  Our dinner was truly a gourmet’s delight both for the palate and the eye.  There are also so many courses that you need to pace yourself.  That was our only complaint.  Our waitress wanted us to place our entire order as “that’s the way they do it”.   My husband said that is not the way we do it and we wish to take our time. We ordered one course at a time and were glad to wait.  Other patrons who allowed the waitress to do it her way were in and out of the supper club within an hour.  We enjoyed a lovely two hour evening of dinner and dance and will do it again.  Please just remember to not order the main course at the same time as appetizer and salad. The cost of this marvelous evening was $30 per person.

Hope this will entice cruisers to step up to Carnival’s Scarlett’s Supper Club.

*Please note that Supper Clubs are available only on Carnival Legend, Carnival Miracle, Carnival Pride, Carnival Spirit, Carnival Conquest, Carnival Glory, Carnival Valor, Carnival Liberty, Carnival Freedom, Carnival Splendor and — coming soon — Carnival Dream.

Allure of the Seas

For it’s inaugural season, the Allure of the Seas will offer 42 sailings to the Eastern & Western Caribbean on 7 night voyages every Sunday, beginning on December 12, 2010.

On Eastern Caribbean sailings, the ports of call are St. Thomas, St. Maarten and Nassau. For Western Caribbean sailings, the ship will call at Falmouth, Jamaica, Cozumel, Mexico & Labadee, Royal Caribbean’s privates beach paradise on the northern coast of Haiti. Both itineraries have 3 days at sea for cruisers to enjoy the 7 neighborhoods found on the Ship.

Both the Oasis of the Seas, and the Allure of the Seas, offer Royal Caribbean’s new neighborhood concept, seven themed areas throughout the ship that offer different experiences for guests to choose, based on their personal styles, preferences or moods. Inspired by seaside entertainment esplanades, Boardwalk will engage the entire family – whether young or young at heart – with eateries, retail outlets, carnival games, and an original, handcrafted carousel – a first at sea. Nine decks above, the first zip-line at sea will whisk guests from end to end on a thrilling aerial adventure. Boardwalk will lead to the AquaTheater at the stern of the ship, where the amphitheater – another first at sea – will offer a guest pool area by day and a performance venue at night, featuring dramatic acrobatics, synchronized swimming, water ballet, professional high-diving, and elaborate fountain shows synchronized to music and lights.

Central Park, a revolutionary design in which the center of the ship opens to the sky, will feature lush, tropical grounds spanning the length of a football field. With its serene pathways, seasonal flower gardens and canopy trees, Central Park will evolve from a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere during the day to a gathering space for alfresco dining and entertainment in the evenings.

The Pool and Sports Zone will feature a sloped-entry beach pool (exclusive to the Oasis-class) and two larger FlowRider surf simulators. Building on the Royal Caribbean’s popular Vitality wellness program, guests will be able to soothe mind, body and soul in the Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, which also includes a dedicated spa area just for teens. Entertainment Place will include the cruise line’s signature after-dark spaces in more intimate venues that offer a variety of entertainment options. And the Youth Zone will offer a wealth of kid- and teen-friendly adventures, featuring the cruise line’s first nursery for infants and toddlers (six months or older).

Bookings for the Allure of the Seas are now open. Call 800-942-3301 for group & early booking fares. For pictures of the Allure’s sister ship, the Oasis of the Seas, visit our Flickr account.
