Panama Canal Cruise via the Caribbean

A Caribbean cruise can provide just the respite from the real world that travelers look for in a well-deserved vacation. Sunny skies, sparkling waters, white-sand beaches stretching for miles…what’s not to love?

It’s no wonder the Caribbean is one of the most popular vacation destinations around…so popular, in fact that virtually all of the major cruise lines offer Caribbean itineraries. As popular as cruises to these areas are, many seasoned cruises have experienced most of the islands more than once. Why not combine your next Caribbean itinerary with a cruise through the Panama Canal for a new twist on this tropical trip?  Many itineraries allow for stops at traditional Caribbean sports, in addition to a stop in the canal. On Celebrity Cruises, for example, enjoy stops in classic ports like George Town, Montego Bay, Cozumel and  Costa Maya in addition to the canal experience.

Even now, more than 90 years after its completion, the Panama Canal is one of the greatest engineering marvels ever built, and still more than just a novelty.  Saving freighters thousands of miles that they’d have to travel around South America each way, the canal ushers approximately 5% of the world’s commercial trade between the Atlantic and Pacific.

It takes approximately nine hours to navigate the canal’s 50 miles, which include three sets of locks that effortlessly lift huge freighters and cruise ships  as high as 85 feet above sea level.  Nearly 14,000 vessels make the voyage each year.

In addition to the trip in the canal, Panama Canal/Caribbean cruises also offer the opportunity to see ports rarely traveled on traditional Caribbean itineraries.  Consider Puerto Limon, on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, where banana plantations and coastal swamp forests thrive. A canopy tour through the jungle offers a unique perspective on the area. The San Blas Islands, just off Panama’s Atlantic coast, are home to the Kuna Indians, while Willemstad, Curacao, a historic port that makes visitors calls to mind Amsterdam, and is know as the shopping capital of the Southern Caribbean.  Some cruises even venture into the waters of the Pacific, hitting ports such as Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica or Colombia before venturing up Mexico’s coastline to San Diego and beyond.

For a unique & experience, consider a Traveler Catamaran and Hotel package, The Discovery, an intimate 7-day voyage on a luxury catamaran from the Pacific to the Atlantic. The Discovery catamaran is just one of two vessels authorized to overnight in the pristine waters of the Barro Colorado Reserve, giving you privileged access to explore the unique flora and fauna of Gatun Lake Encounter tribal villages and wildlife in the Darien Jungle and then immerse in the beauty and tranquility of the Pearl Islands Delve into the riveting history of the Spanish Main along Panama’s Atlantic coast. A superior vacation value… An all-inclusive cruise, a luxury hotel, and private sightseeing in the Old Town of Panama City – a Colonial gemSome cruises even venture into the waters of the Pacific, hitting ports such as Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica or Colombia before venturing up Mexico’s coastline to San Diego and beyond.
